Dustin Ragland is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and engineer who’s used Ableton Live on the road and in the studio since Live 2.1. Since 2003 he's been working as a touring musician, usually as a drummer, with a diverse crew of singer-songwriters and indie bands, including worship artist Charlie Hall.
- Oklahoma City OK United States
Dustin uses Ableton Live in a variety of settings, from a “traditional” tracking DAW, to flexible live accompaniment with bands, to audio/visual installations, and of course as a creative tool for composition both live and in the studio.
He also uses Ableton Live in his solo and ensemble performances as Young Weather, with a particular focus on blending acoustic instruments with electronic elements, and real time effects on live percussion and analog samplers and drum machines. Being able to work out complex arrangements in advance, as well as leaving plenty of room for spontaneous improvisation, are key elements of Young Weather’s use of Live.
Incorporating Push into the studio for control and composition, and using Push as a live instrument, alongside guitars, samplers, and a drum kit, Dustin is always working on ways to bring Live’s “in the box” elements to visual, kinetic, and “out of the box” physical controls - to stand alongside the more expected rock music instruments.
Dustin is an adjunct professor of Music Production at ACM@UCO in downtown Oklahoma City, where he has taught Ableton Live in a classroom setting for 6 years, including basic Max For Live concepts and programming. He is also available for private and/or group lessons, workshops for churches, bands, and art galleries/venues, customized for anyone from complete beginners to experienced creators.
