Turntables Transformed: Converting Disc Images to Sound

The image of a turntable is iconic: a tone arm reads music from a spinning disc. But what if that disc is cut from a tree, or features geometric patterns rather than a vinyl groove? Two inspiring pieces use Ableton Live, along with other software, to translate these nontraditional discs into sound. We found these projects, among many others, on the Creative Applications Network.

First up, Bartholomäus Traubeck's Years translates wood year rings into sound:

Soundmachines, a project of Berlin-based studio The Product, features "visual turntables" that translate geometric patterns from custon discs into control signals sent to Live:
