Free Stuff Friday: Thick Delay, Max for Live Mashup, and a Color-Controlled Synth

By now, you know what Friday means - it’s time for some free stuff, right here on Ableton.com, courtesy of the creative and inspiring Ableton community. This week, we’ve got a delay that thickens things up, a Max for Live effect for mashing up loops, and a synth controlled by colors.

With the Thickness

Delays are versatile effects - aside from their usual use for decaying echos, they can also be used for stereo spacing, flanging, chorusing, and generally thickening up sounds. Watch below as musician Michael Durek aka The Use demonstrates his Effect Rack for using delay to make thick, lush sounds:

Working with Certified Trainer Isaac Cotec aka Subaqueous, Michael has made Thick Delays available as a free download.

Mash It

Musician and Max for Live hacker Ned Rush describes his Mash Up instrument as “a useful tool for those creative blocks”. Drop a loop into Mash Up, then get mangling and see what you can do with the creative, chance-based results. Watch and hear Mash Up in action:

Ned Rush has teamed up with fellow Max wizard Darren Cowley of Isotonik Studios, to offer Mash Up for free for the month of September 2014.

Color In Your Sound

The Max for Live community never ceases to surprise us with its inspiring devices - including some out of left field. vCroma, from wiredm4ls, is a synth for generating music based on the RGB color values of incoming video.

Working with video clips, live camera input, or a built-in video synthesizer, vCroma makes spacey synth blips based on the colors in the video, and also includes a nice reverb effect. If you’re looking for something far from the traditional synth, you’ll want to give it a try.

That’s a wrap for this week’s free stuff! Got some of your own free stuff to share with us? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ - and don’t forget to use #FreeStuffFriday!
