FAQ
What is the license policy for Live?
A Live license is registered to a single user and can be installed on up to two of their computers. Read the full license policy.
How can I find my upgrade price if I have an existing Live license?
To see your upgrade options, sign into your Ableton account and visit the webshop.
Which payment methods are accepted?
Here you can find detailed information on accepted payment methods.
Where can I compare the features of each edition of Live?
Visit the Compare Editions page for a feature-by-feature comparison of Intro, Standard, and Suite.
What is rent-to-own?
Rent-to-own lets you rent a Live 12 Suite license on a monthly basis. Once you’ve made enough payments to cover the full license price, you’ll own it in full. You’ll have full access to Live while you’re renting it, and you’ll pay the same amount as you would for a one-off purchase.
How is rent-to-own different from a subscription plan?
With rent-to-own, each payment goes toward owning a full license. Once you’ve completed all payments, the license is yours to keep.
A subscription, on the other hand, involves paying a monthly fee indefinitely, with no possibility of ownership.
Which edition is available for rent-to-own?
Rent-to-own plans are now available for all new Live 12 Suite licenses.
Rent-to-own plans are also available for Live 12 Suite educational licenses to those who meet EDU eligibility requirements. Head to the educational shop for more details.
Can I pause my rent-to-own plan?
Yes, you can pause your plan at any time. You’ll retain access to Live until the end of your current billing cycle.
If you resume your plan after pausing, you’ll start making payments again and your progress towards license ownership will continue where it left off.
Will I be able to upgrade to the next version of Live after buying a Live Suite license with a rent-to-own plan?
If an upgrade becomes available while your rent-to-own plan is active, you can choose to upgrade by extending your rent-to-own plan. This will extend the number of monthly payments, covering the cost of the upgrade.
Once you finish paying off your current version, that license is yours to keep. The upgrade will then continue as rent-to-own until it’s fully paid off — then you’ll own that license in full as well.
Can I upgrade from Live Intro or Live Standard to Live Suite using a rent-to-own plan?
No, rent-to-own plans are not available to purchase edition upgrades.
Can I upgrade from an older version of Live Suite using a rent-to-own plan?
No, rent-to-own is not currently available for upgrades from older versions of Live Suite to Live Suite 12.
Do I need to be online to use Live with rent-to-own? How does Live check whether my plan is active?
Live needs an internet connection the first time you launch in order to activate your rent-to-own plan. After that, Live will periodically verify that your plan is active. You can use Live offline for up to 3 days between verification checks.
If your computer stays offline longer than that, saving and exporting will be disabled until Live can reconnect and verify that your plan is active.
Can I pay off my remaining balance to instantly get my license?
Yes, you can pay off the remaining balance of your rent-to-own plan at any time to own your license in full.
Can I transfer the payments to purchase other Ableton product?
No. You can only purchase the product that you’re renting by paying the remaining balance. However, you cannot transfer your rent-to-own payments to purchase other products (e.g. Live 12 Intro or Standard).
Are the features in Live 12 Suite I get when paying with a rent-to-own plan the same as the features in Live 12 Suite?
Yes, all the features are exactly the same. Paying for Live 12 Suite with a rent-to-own plan simply lets you spread the cost of the license over 24 more affordable monthly payments.
Can I get Live Intro or Live Standard with a rent-to-own plan?
No, rent-to-own plans are only available for Live Suite.
