Volume envelope on an unwarped/unlooped audio clip?

Does anyone know if it should be possible to add a volume envelope to an unwarped/unlooped audio clip?

I have a one-shot clip that I want to have some leading silence on. But the envelope section is disabled until I warp the sample.

I feel like this used to be possible in Live 8.. does anyone know if this was ever possible, and whether the current Live 9 behaviour is possibly a bug?

I can verify that this is not possible in any version of Ableton Live. The solution however would depend on what exactly you are trying to achieve? From what you have described however the only way to achieve the silence would be to edit the sample externally using a wave editor like Audacity.

This is only possible via so-called 'dummy clips'.
Route the original audio to a new audio track with a warped audio clip. Set the channel receiving audio to 'monitor in' and inside the warped clip you can draw automation.
If you trigger the scene your clips are on, it will trigger both the sample and the dummy clip at the same time.

To visually aid the process you can do the automation editing on your timeline first and then cut + paste
