Using Ableton and FCB1010 to emulate a hardware loop pedal, e.g., BOSS RC-50?

Does anyone know of a tutorial for configuring Looper and an FCB1010 to emulate a Boss RC-50?  How about other popular loopers?

The FCB1010 can't be configured to emulate anything since it's just a midi controller. But you can program Live to emulate just about any hardware looper, and then control Live with the FCB1010.

What I ended up doing was renting a Boss RC-50 from Long and McQuade (local music store) for a weekend to get a really good feel of how the hardware unit worked. There were features I liked (like 'Single' and 'Multiple' modes, and the stereo input switch trick) and some I didn't (like the way it 'quantized' the loop phrases).

Once I had an understanding of how the unit operated, I could start programming Live to behave the same way. I know have a 'Single' and 'Multi' mode, and I use the same 4 buttons on the FCB1010 (1/2/6/7) to control play/stop/undo/clear for 2 different loopers (which are racked in a custom looper rack). This still leaves me with 6 buttons left over for other things in Live.

I use a lot of midi tracks, and dummy clips, as well as midi mapping and clip automation/follow actions to achieve this. I then group all my automation tracks (clips triggered by the FCB1010, depending on the 'state' of my rack looper) and my racked loopers into 1 group track, just to keep things tidy.

I've been trying various hardware and software loopers for almost three years now. And I'm constantly building and rebuilding different control versions of my live set. I'm pretty happy with where it is now, but there is always room for improvement.

I hadn't thought about making my looper live set a Live Pack until I read your question. If you, or anyone else for that matter, is interested I can create a Live Pack and upload it to my blog (mydigitalheart.wordpress.com), I would love to share and get feedback.

In the meantime, check out to hear a couple tracks (first two) I did with this Looper Rack. All guitar parts where recorder live with it.

    Hope that helps ya!

    Hello,

What you need to do is get this free plugin 'Mobius 2'.

    http://www.circularlabs.com/doc/v2/installation.htm

Although it is possible to configure Ableton using either Looper or other methods to re-create the features of the classic Boss looper it is not exactly simple. Mobius however is, and all the parameters can be assigned to MIDI control messages from the pedal or indeed anywhere.

    Hello,

I made a project using a FCB1010 to make a looper with 4 loops, and only 2 buttons to command Rec/Play/Ovr andClear functions.

4 other pedals are used to select a looper, the other pedal are general transports of Live.

This is working on Mac OS, because i needed to create a virtual Midi port using IAC Driver (think PC does have something like this !)

Here is the SysEx for the FCB1010, coming with a pdf (written in French...Sorry !) to help you to create anything needed to make it work, and of course the Live project to use the looper !

    Here is the link,

Hope everything will work good ;-)

    Hi!

I made my own system with X loopers and X banks (you can configure it). The default setup is 8 loopers and 4 banks. I´m using it and work pretty well.

For more info, you can visit:

    Thanks!

I'd be interested in seeing this as a Live Pack. Please post the link here as this is an easy place to follow your posts.

    Hi Ghost Machina,

You say you use pedals 1/2/6/7 to control play/stop/undo/clear for 2 different loopers. That is exactly what I want to do. Please, how do you set up Live to this WITHOUT HAVING LIVE REACT TO THESE PEDALS ON BOTH LOOPERS AT THE SAME TIME ? I've been breaking my head to achieve this for ages ! Many thanks
