Unable to drop midi clips from one track to the other

Either me, this program, or most likely both are stupid, but it seems to me that I should be able to copy a midi clip from any track in the arrange view into another midi track and have that instrument play the midi notes.  Unfortunately I am trying to do this in a set and although the clip copies to the other track, the clip is grayed out.  No matter what I do I can't get the clip to play (check both states of the back to arrangement button, overdub button, make sure the clip is enabled and the notes are on, etc.).  I can play my keyboard and hear the notes but when I push play there is no sound on that channel.  The only way I could get this to work was to copy the original clip from the arrangement view back to its own session channel, then copy the session clip to the new tracks session, then drag the session clip back to the arrangement view on the new channel, and then it worked.  This is efficient workflow????  Hopefully I'm just missing something simple or is it just a bug that only I have to deal with?  Just to prove I'm not crazy I opened a new set and tried it -- the easy way to do it works, just drag the clip from one track to the other.  Now I open the other set up and it still won't work the same way in this other file.  Why would it make any difference?  These are the quirks that make me quit using this program over and over again.  I have seen things like this over and over again where there is something simple you are trying to do and it is like the universe is playing games with you because it just won't work.  Then you open up a new file just to make sure you are not insane and it works exactly like you have been trying for 2 hours!  ARGHHHHH I HATE LIVE!  I wish I could like it and parts of it I do, but I have had so many headaches just trying to do the simplest things that works sometimes and other times not.

The clips become greyed out when the clip is transferred from a track that has it's i-o set to auto to a track set to in. This is the first thing I would check. If this does not work, then I have no idea what it might be.
