Sudden Crackling with M-Audio
I hope I'm not duplicating a post here, but I need help with this issue since it's started to drive me completely nuts. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
The problem: During a live session either recording or during playback, everything is fine and the sound is perfect. Then, all of a sudden, I get a constant static/crackling/distortion sound on top of everything that lingers until I click the audio engine off and then back on (by clicking on the CPU status bar at the top right of the Live interface). That clears things up for a few minutes until the same problem occurs again.
I'm getting tired of clicking the audio engine off and then on again only to temporarily resolve this. Not to mention how hard it is to focus in the middle of a recording session when this happens all of a sudden and I'm forced to either end the session or endure the distortion so I can lay the track down.
I am using a Dell Inspiron 600M with a 1.60 GHz processor and 516MB RAM. My setup is the M-Audio Fasttrack Pro audio interface with ASIO. I operate sampling rate at 16 and my latency settings within the normal range of 512-1024, so I wouldn't suspect that could be causing the issue.
Having read lately about CPU overloading and, presuming that was the problem, I've adjusted my BOIS (A17) configuration to disable Speedstep. And my power options (in control panel) are now set to maintain power in the "Always On" setting. With those settings, CPU usually only tops out at about 40%.
I'm not sure what else to try. Can anyone provide insight? Thanks.
