session view midi track preview?

i swear i was able to select a midi track in session view and play notes with my mpk49 without record enabling the track. now i have to hit the record enable button to preview notes from the midi track.

is there a way to preview notes without record enabling a track by just selecting the midi track column?

I have never heard of anything like this. You can turn on and off the midi tracks via the number keys, but you would still have to send midi to all of them, increasing your processing load. You can also set various tracks to monitor "in" but besides that, you are either a midi mapping, a keystroke, or a couple of clicks away from switching your instrument.
