Sending MIDI control through an armed track in Arrangement Record mode

Hi, I've been struggling with this for quite some time, so far I haven't found a straightforward solution.

I am trying to control a external synthesizer in multi mode (i.e. each channel controls a separate instrument). My workflow is to record and loop midi clips and play around with the control knobs on the synthesizer (with local control disabled, all MIDI is routed through Live).

If I work with Arrangement Record disabled, I can record notes in a clip and change filter cutoffs and other MIDI control parameters, but these changes will not be recorded in track automation.

If I have Arrangement Record enabled, none of my MIDI control changes are received by the synthesizer. I know it's possible to enable Session Record, but in this case the parameter changes are recorded into track automation, but also to the MIDI clips. I don't wish to record any parameter overdubs to the clips.

Also an annoying side effect is that while I can record a parameter change into the clip, the beginning of the clip will always reset the parameter to it's previous value, and it's almost impossible to "catch" the beginning of the clip and overdub. For example, if the parameter change is filter cutoff, this sometimes means sudden and jarring changes in sound, which is not nice.

I'm at my wit's end. I am hoping there is some easy solution to this that I've missed from the documentation. I have also tried to separate control and note events using the pizMidi VSTs, but I couldn't figure out a routing system that worked..

Thanks in advance for any pointers!

It seems you have to use two different tracks, one for notes and one for CCs... both of them receiving midi from and routed to your external gear.

Both tracks will receive notes and CCs, but you can use midi filter max device in one track to permit only notes and other instance in the other track to permit only CC.

    I hope it helps.

Thanks for your suggestion. I think this could work.

However if I am correct, this means that I would have to arm two separate MIDI tracks if I want to send notes or CC. I guess a workaround for this is to just map a keyboard key for arming the two tracks. Currently I'm using a Novation Launchpad for that, but doubling the number of tracks would either mean that I could display half the amount of tracks I do now, or just have to page through the mixer to arm the CC track. I don't think track grouping would help here either..
