Scarlett 6i6 & 2i2: ASIO suddenly became unusable on two different laptops simultaneously.

Hi, i was wondering if anyone got the same problem recently.

2 different laptops, each running Windows7sp1, 64bit OS, 4gig memory, one with Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 1st gen. and the other one with Scarlett 6i6 1st gen. and within the same week, if ASIO Focusrite Scarlett is selected in the prefs, LIve gets horribly sluggish at startup, loading default set for, like, 3mn, and when started, there is no sound and the transport is weird: i have to click on play to stop.

Since this happens simultaneously with two different computers, i suspect that a change brought by windows update could be the reason.

I was running Live 9.6 for nine months without any problem.

When my problem recently occurred i updated Live to 9.7.1, then 9.7.2, but nothing changed.

Moreover, to be sure it's not some virus or something like that, i wiped the system partition on one of my two laptops and did a fresh windows 7 install.

And, to my surprise, the problem is still here.

The Focusrite ASIO USB driver is a bit dated, 2014, so i wonder if a recent windows update is causing trouble to the driver. If any windows7/scarlett user had this problem too, then maybe i could presume that indeed, the windows update is the culprit.

I contacted Focurite and still no response.

Ironically, on my third laptop, which is a mainly internet use modest machine, full of various software, windows 32bit, the Live 9.7.2 +ASIO+Scarlett combo works like a charm and is snappy as hell.

Anybody having similar problem ?

I am slowly starting to think there is some voodoo behind this, this is just unbelievable, and i think i tried, many, many, things (database pref. reset, switching things on and off, exchange soundcards between the two laptops, uninstalling, re-installing, etc ... )

This is unbearable, i just can't work and am considering purchasing an emergency soundcard.

Thank You

Try to have a look at this forum: http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=191335&page=2

TL;DR:  Try to install the beta version of focusrite driver: http://beta.focusrite.com/releases/focusrite_usb2_drivers/

Ableton support got back to me and gave me a download link for 9.7.1 to see if that worked. Sure enough, it worked a treat, no issues everything back up and running and no issues with ASIO.

Thanks to the links that "mrul" shared a few posts ago, I can confirm though that it is Avast Anti Virus in my case that is causing 9.7.2 not to work (and presumably AVG Anti Virus as well if you read that cuckos Reaper thread).  I tested it by uninstalling Avast prior to retrying the 9.7.2 installation. Without Avast... no issues. Quick start, set up ASIO, test tone, no issues.

So presumably it's something that either Ableton or Avast could possibly fix if they got together.

I'll certainly be reporting it back to the Tech Support when closing up my current open issue.

    Cheers all.

I forgot to add that the Focusrite ASIO driver is the latest they have, and that it works fine with Bidule, MDrummer Large, and other programs.

Also, i still can use the Scarlett(s) with MME but i can't record because of the latency under this configuration.

    I need ASIO.

ASIO4All doesn't take my Scarlett either with Live.

    Thanks for any insight.

Same problem here - just started up Live for the first time in a couple of days and no sound at all with the asio driver whereas mmd/directx works fine.

    Focsurite 2i4 in my case.

Not very helpful I know, but I'm in the same boat.

I started having the same problem a couple of days ago with a 6i6.

Some things I've noticed are that the test tone doesn't produce sound and the play button turns green but playback doesn't occur, the cursor doesn't move.

Like you said, it takes an unusually long time to start up Live if it's set to the Focusrite driver beforehand. It also always crashes when closing the program.

Changing the sample rate within Live still also changes the Scarlett's sample rate shown in MixControl.

Trying to change the Driver Error Compensation instantly crashes Live, but I've never touched that before so I don't know if that's abnormal.

Live's working with other drivers fine.

Somehow I magically managed to get it working again by restarting my computer, but that only worked a few times and now it won't at all.

    Hi guys,

It seems i got the problem solved.

I don't exactly know how, things got a bit complicated, 2 soundcards, 2 computers, 1 fresh windows install, but for sure i succeeded when i un-installed Live and re-installed with the 9.6 instead of the 9.7 installer(s) .

For some reason it never worked with the 9.7.2 or 9.7.3 installers.

Maybe i could now update automatically to 9.7.3, but i'd rather stay with 9.6 since all my sets are done with this version.

So i un-installed anything Focusrite and Ableton first. Then i re-installed the Focusrite drivers only and made sure i restarted the computer afterwards. Then, with the Scarlett(s) unplugged, i installed Live 9.6, ran it once with MME/DirectX, and then restarted the computer. And then i ran Live, selected the ASIO option, and it seemed to work. Of course i thought everything would get bad again after restarting Live once more, but to my surprise, it was still working.

It's been two days now i switch Live on and off and no problems whatsoever.

Phew ... a good week of time and energy wasted ... sometimes one can really hate computers !

Support has been very dedicated and helpful for a problem that doesn;t seem to be directly due to Live but to an unhappy combination between Live and the Scarletts, which are otherwise some tremendous value.

I was really close to buy an inexpensive Behringer new audio interface, they seem really good. Anyway ...

I hope you guys will get well and working with Live soon.

    Thank you for chiming in.

    Addendum:

Oooops, i forgot to turn auto updates off and i am now on 9.7 ...

    No problems at all.

    Very useful, thanks !

At the bottom of my despair, i checked all that Windows had updated, and i was strongly suspecting this malicious software removal tool. I just couldn't figure out how to disable it, and meanwhile, a complete Focusrite/Ableton 9.6 solved the problem on my two machines.

This is very precious, thank you.

    Hey guys,

First of all I'm so relieved to see that other people are having the same problem! I've been literally stressing for days trying to figure out what to do. I was at the point of "Well, I heard Presonus interfaces are pretty good..." when I found this! I have Live 9.7.2 and a 2i2. The exact same issues. Then I downloaded the beta for Focusrite and I'm back in business!

    Thanks so much, mrul!

OMG. Just sitting at my desk at work, eating my lunch, and decided to pop in here and have a look around after a very frustrating weekend on my PC.

Very similar (almost identical) issues but with a different sound device.

My story (and I've contacted tech support but no response yet), Got a new SSD and thought what better time to do a complete fresh install of Win7 (64bit). All Win updates and drivers installed, Ableton was one of the first bits of software to be installed. Put Live 9.7.2, loaded it up, and .... crawls its way through creating a live set, then no CPU usage in top corner, play button goes green but does nothing, test tone ... nothing.

I'm using the Creative X7 Limited Edition sound device by the way. Using ASIO just wouldn't work. MMX no probs.

Long story short, firmware upgrades, ensuring all drivers were latest... even doing the Win7 install all over again.... no joy with Live 9.7.2. So uninstalled Live again. Decided to start with Live 9.1 or whatever version was on the CD in the box when I bought it. IT ONLY WORKED. ASIO no issue, all quick.

So I let it auto update all the way to the last version it would do (9.2.3), and everything still working. Tried to the jump to latest 9.7.2 and BANG, stopped working again. Realised I could install multiversions on my machine so downloaded 9.6.2 and that worked fine.

So I think Ableton have done something in 9.7.2 to break ASIO in some instances (otherwise there would be uproar on the forum if it was all ASIO).

Roll on 9.7.3 so I can test that :)

At least my PC works and so does A version of Live. (3 days of getting very frustrated over, also had major probs with .NET during my windows installation... related ? Probably not).

So I updated Avast and everything seems to be working fine now, I didn't even have to uninstall.

I did install the Focusrite beta drivers beforehand, but nothing changed until I updated Avast, so I don't know if they did any good.

Thank you everyone for the help.
