Pops and clicks that vanish without a cause?

During recording a live ensemble I noticed there were clicks and pops not related to the levels. They appeared on all channels simultaneously, didn't seem to follow any patterns and as this was recorded live I couldn't really do anything but hope they'd go away. They did. I did absolutely nothing and the clicks disappeared on their own about half way through. I read several explanations for that sort of noise from hardware related to buffer size but nothing that would explain them just going away. Especially twice. I've done a second recording the next day, everything was exactly the same and once more the pops were there until they weren't. (first day after 40 minutes, second day after 25 minutes) Any ideas what actually happened?

I realise this is probably a long shot but is it in any way possible to remove or reduce them? Or are the recordings completely ruined?

PS: The pops don't show up as spikes in the waveform - they sound as if the sample was split and put together unnaturally.
