noob question about Hot-Swap

Please forgive my noob-ness, but I am having trouble with Hot Swap and I thought maybe someone might be able to help.

If I click  the Hot Swap icon on, say, an Instrument device, this opens the Browser and a banner says, "Swapping Instrument."  I see other presets I can swap. When I scroll through these presets, I don't hear any change. Instead, I hear a short preview of that preset and see a corresponding short audio clip in my preview pane.

Similarly, if I click Hot Swap on an Audio Effect device and scroll through presets, there is no change in the sound. It is only when I click "Return" that I actually hear the preset but then I am committing to a change.

Is this the expected behavior with Hot Swap? Did I bungle some preference somewhere?

I noticed that the hot-swap icon does not appear in my browser as it does in the video tutorials I have watched.....so that is maybe a clue?

Thank you so much!

This is extremely frustrating, because this kind of "in-place" hot-swap is exactly what Ableton promises in the manual!

    https://www.ableton.com/en/manual/working-with-instruments-and-effects/#live-device-presets

    Specifically:

"Pressing  or clicking a device’s Hot-Swap Presets button will temporarily link the browser to a device and reveal its presets. With the device and browser linked in this manner, you can quickly browse and audition different presets. In Hot-Swap Mode, devices and presets are loaded automatically upon selection in the browser. To load a device’s default factory settings, select the parent folder of its presets (i.e., the one with the device’s name) from the browser."

But the feature simply doesn't work, at all.  What's going on here?

unfortunately you aren't going to be able to preview the hot swap sound without committing to the exchange... for example.. if you wrote a melody in a midi clip... you could hot swap between all the midi instruments to find the best sound that would be applicable to the notes... with audio clips it can be more tricky because you might already have a rack of effects you're happy with before you begin swapping out presets... what i would do is save your effects rack before you start swapping... then you can start experimenting. Also you can always duplicate the track you are considering changing and then mute the original and tweak the new one to see if you like it better.. then go back and forth between muting the two to compare them
