Mix tape sounds dull after rendering, how do I get it better sounding?

I like to make mix tapes with commercial mp3 songs, after I render the mix, most of the time the mix sounds dull. But as I understand it the quality of the tracks should be the same as when I loaded them into ableton. How can I improve this?

The soundcard shouldn't make any difference to how the file is rendered, so you don't need to get an external soundcard just to render. It's more likely that you need to check your render settings, or improve your mixing skills, starting with compression and EQing. If you upload samples to soundcloud you could post them here and it would be easier to understand the problem you are having.

Get a dedicated (external) soundcard and use some 'mastering' fx, for starters.
