Midi parts won't play. It shows they are playing but no sound is actually coming out.

Hi,

Ive been using Ableton for a bit over 6 months now. I had this problem in the past but it was not a big deal because my productions were small with few instruments and little layering. Now that my music is coming together and Ive progressed to start using VSTs they sometimes won't play. For example in my newest song this was my biggest problem: I used massive to create a melody. For a while it worked and everything sounded good but as I added on more instruments and sounds all of the sudden certain midi parts would just not play. It would show that the parts are hitting and there are levels but there was no sound. It was extremely frustrating because sometimes they would randomly turn back on. I have no idea what I was doing wrong. Sometimes when I would quit and restart Ableton everything would be ok for a few minuets and then a part would go out. Also sometimes an instrument would hit just one note and keep it going for ever until I stopped the song. Just one continuos tone. I use a MacBook and I use mostly Arrangement view. I am lost and I have no idea what to do. I had to give up and start a new project because it got too frustrating to turn on and off in hope that all the parts would play.

Thank you

Same here. We need an answer Ableton. I bought PUSH about a month ago and I'm noticing that sometimes buttons are lit up, but don't play sound. Or, I'll record an automation and it won't play that automation; I'll then go to another part of the project and I'll hear the automation that was recorded. This definitely appears to be a bug…. Could we get some answers please?

Same thing is happening to me.  Everything sounds good when I'm recording and notes appear as they should... but playback does not pick up notes.  It seems to happen when I drop the tempo below 60 bpm and play a fast solo.  Very frustrating and if this can't be fixed I want my money back to invest in a better DAW.

I have a Korg Taktile and only 15 keys emit sound out of 49 keys. Same thing with the pads. I can see they send midi signal but do not emit sound. Track is armed everything on in in-out, ruling out defective hardware since it works in other vst's, maschine, etc.

    Same problem here.

I've used Ableton for years. Cannot remember this happening before.

Using Windows 10 - perhaps related to this?

I had the same problem, I used Instruments rack, for some reason the chain selector moved when recording, that made the midi play but no sound coming out. I rearranged the chain selector and that solved the problem for me.

This will sound totally unrelated but I had some playback issues fixed once I turned my wifi off. This was with a macbook pro with the latest (at the time) version of Live.

Click "Live" at the top left hand corner of your computer screen. Click preferences. Click the MIDI/SYNC tab at the left. Then, under "control surface" select none rather the the preset APC20. That did the trick for me. If it still doesn't work for you, play around with the different options in "control surface."

    Hi everybody,

Just a quick suggestion from our side, if you experience any kind of playback issues, please get in touch with our support team and make sure to include a Status Report.

    https://www.ableton.com/en/help/contact-support/

Although an issue like "I don't hear audio" might sound similar to what you experience, but there could be many different reasons for such a symptom and we would like to look at this case by case.

    Best,

    daw

    !!!! ANSWER HERE !!!!

I was having the same problem until...

You open up the Control Editor for Maschine and then everything is fixed.  You can close the window after that but the Control Editor needs to be opened at least once during your session.  Preferably do it before you open up live, but I just opened mine up during my session and then everything was fixed.  May the beats keep on rolling!

    SOLUTION:
The solution that worked for me is found at 5.4, pages 69-70 in the ableton manual under the heading LIVE CLIPS.
I was also having the problem of not hearing my imported midi. I created these midi tracks in Ableton. I initially exported the midi tracks onto a file on my desktop. I then dragged and dropped all of these midi tracks into a new song’s arrangement window.  Yes, I had assigned the same midi instruments onto each track. Still, even though I was seeing all of the green lights indicating that there is data, I was getting NO SOUND.

The solution I found is to open up the (Ableton) song in which I originally created these midi files, save these midi files as LIVE CLIPS by dragging each midi file from the track into the PLACES section of the browser, located on the left. Then I opened up the new song, and simply dragged and dropped the LIVE CLIPS from the PLACES section of the browser, instead of dragging and dropping the midi files from the folder of my desktop. Voila, now I can hear my midi data in the tracks. It's MIDI in the tracks, not audio.

I have this issue.  It seems, with Omnisphere particularly, that a track I am routing its audio to will turn itself to a MIDI track.  When I reload the original, I verify that it was indeed an Audio track, but somehow became a MIDI track.  Obviously if I am routing output (of an Omnisphere channel) to this track, and it is now a MIDI track, it doesn't do anything with the audio, so I hear silence. (This just happened incidentally, with a totally up-to-date Ableton Live Intro.

Another thing has happened with Omnisphere as well, but it is strictly an Omnisphere bug, rather than an Ableton bug, but I will notify you since I mentioned Omnisphere in the first place; namely that Omnisphere, in prior versions, would sometimes lower its own volume slider to zero after a glitchy type sound.

    Hope you have sound again!

    **THIS MAY HELP**

I had the same problem. I noticed media files were missing even though it didn't show as "samples offline". Once I saw the notification ableton provides, I clicked it and searched the files, which ableton found and put them in place. Resulting in my midi tracks playing. This happens when you move the files out of their original place. This can also happen with any file.

In case you haven't had to recover files, click the bottom of the screen where is notifies you in yellow that the files are missing. The "help/tutorial" box pops up on the right of your screen. Click "go" at the top right of that and it will search. I hope this helped.

It can be your plugins demo expiration date, and purchase the plugins that have the demo trial period expired would fix the issue. That issue you mention was happening to me and I went through the list which I had for plugin purchase and the ones I bought or stopped the white noise (that was the indicator or I would be left in the dark) and other ones started producing sound. Then the plugins I couldn't buy I simply deleted them when I knew I couldn't purchase them and that stopped the white noise coming from tracks and synths stopping the outgoing sound from a 20 track project after a 15 min. period.
