MIDI Effects that act like raw controller input

If you have an arp, note repeat or chord/scale function on a MIDI controller this effected MIDI info will enter Live without it knowing what alterations are happening at the source and all MIDI info is recorded.

However, if you use a MIDI effect on a track Live will know this is added after the base note info and so will not record the arp pattern or note repeat (this will be dependant on the MIDI device).

Is there a convenient way to mimic the first scenario with Live or a Max device?
I know you can set the MIDI effect on a dummy channel that feeds into the target channel but this seems awkward and always involves setup. You don't have full control over all the track's elements from one armed track (plugin parameters and MIDI notes..) which some controller setups depend on.
