Live looping setup

I'm a complete Ableton newbie, and was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a good tutorial on live looping.

What I want to be able to do is create the song arrangement without actually anything recorded, and have the structure completely automated from the beginning, so I can recreate my loop compositions live.

For example, set the length of the first loop to x number of bars and repeat the loop y number of times, then stop, and have ableton automatically create a new loop after recording the first, so I can continue playing and building the song. I realise I may need a footswitch to trigger and stop recording, but it would be nice if the whole arrangement could be automated.

Is there a good tutorial on using Live in this particular way out there somewhere?

Look up tutorials on the Live "Loop" device and then specifically "Dummy Clips" which are blank midi clips that you can trigger or time (using Follow actions).
