Latency triggering samples for live performance

I'm running Lite 9 on a 2008 Macbook Pro (2.4 GHz Intel Duo processor with 4GB RAM) with an Apogee One external interface.

I have created a number of samples, which are basically individual chords. In a single Audio group I have set up each sample and assigned via MIDI a key to trigger each on a keyboard midi controller.

The 1st chord triggers instantly. However, the subsequent chords trigger with varying and inconsistent degrees of latency.

The samples are out of loop and warp and are assigned to run from RAM.

I've tried various things to try to overcome the problem, including reducing the sample rate in Preferences. I have also set up Ableton on a newer Mac (2.5 GHz i7 with 16GB RAM). All to no avail.

Strangely, when I preview each clip under the 'instruments' list, each triggers instantly.

So, what's going wrong then? Any assistance from someone out there would be very much appreciated
