How to stop Ableton from scanning C:\ drive for vst files at startup when it is causing it to crash at startup?

Hi, I was playing around with scanning for vst files under Ableton preferences. I wanted to check the C:\ drive to see if there were any existing vst files that I was not aware of. This caused Ableton to crash. When I tried to open Ableton again, it tried to scan the C:\ drive and then the program crashed. Therefore, I was unable to go back into Ableton preferences to change the vst folder setting back to the way it was. I have tried this many times with a reboot. I am using Windows 7 with a 750 GB HDD (85% full), 2.4 GB Intel Quadcore, 4GB RAM, and Ableton Suite 8.2; everything was working great until last night.

The first few (10+) messages that I get are:

Runtime Error!

Program: C...

An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly.

Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Then finally it comes to the message, Live 8.2.exe has stopped working.

Do I have any options other than a reinstall?
