How-To: Assign Stylus RMX to 8 Drum Racks Compatible with PUSH

This isn't a question, rather a how-to.

Spectrasonics Stylus RMX is a grove drumming program.  It has predefined groves in it, which makes it very useful for those wanting to use good patterns, but what I want to do is take advantage of Ableton's drum racks so that stylus RMX is available as a drum rack on PUSH.

This is how you do it:

  1. First create an midi track and drag a drum rack to it.
  2. On the drum rack, show the Chain List, then the I/O section.
  3. Drop a Stylus RMX plugin into the devices.
  4. Under "Receive" change "C1" to "All Notes".
  5. Change the track name to "Stylus RMX"

Now you have a drum rack which accepts your own slice programming from RMX.

To get the other 7 channels to work, do this 7 times:

  1. Create MIDI track.
  2. Drag a drum rack to it.
  3. On the drum rack, show the Chain List, then the I/O section.
  4. Drag an external instrument to the devices.
  5. Under "Receive" change "C1" to "All Notes".
  6. Set the external instrument's "MIDI To - Routing Target" to "Stylus RMX".
  7. Set the external instrument's "MIDI To - Channel" to "2-Stylus RMX".  (you'll set it to 3,4,5,6,7,8 for the other channels).
  8. Set Audio From to "B-Stylus RMX" (you'll set it to C,D,E,F,G,H for the other channels).

In Stylus RMX, go to the MIXER and set the OUT to A to H for the 8 channels.

NOTE: RMX will reset the OUT to A when you reassign the patch, unless you have the SETTINGS button off in the Browser window.  So keep that in mind.

Now, you have 8 drum racks where you can now use the Stylus RMX sounds like a drum kit, and reprogram the sequence any way you want.

How cool is that?

I did relatively the same thing utilizing one drum rack with Stylus and 7 external instruments. I routed each of the 8 channels within the drum rack to 8 pads and 8 separate midi tracks respectively. I use the setup for drum kits.

I'd be happy to post the Drum rack instrument preset. Reply to the post if you'd like the preset.
