How do you make trap-style sub kick drums sit evenly in a mix?

Yes, I know this is a newbie question - but I've done countless research and experimenting on my own with a little compression, EQ (creating steep shelf in frequencies below -50 range, layering mid-kicks with low-kicks) but I always end up with a weak sounding kick OR a heavily distorted one that's loud and poppy but makes the mix too muddy. I'm wondering if this is an issue with my monitors, am I supposed to have them blaring at me at full blast to attain that kind of clean, even kick? I've been producing for almost 9 years, 3 with Ableton, and I've bought Izotopes, Decapitator and other plug-ins that don't seem to help. Is this an issue with a limiter?

HELP! Thanks guys
