How do you get a crisp, professional mix down for producing hip hop beats?

I know the foundation to a good mix is using EQ 8 and compression techniques but I literally have no clue how to utilize such functions (or how to even mix for that matter). I understand that each track is unique and different things will be done to get a good sounding production but is there anyone that can give a simple, yet informative step by step example for mixing hip hop tracks for beginners?? Laying out the format of the beat is no problem but it is very frustrating spending a lot of time trying to figure out mixing and mastering when I have absolutely no mixing experience. YouTube tutorials haven't been much help and I have yet to find someone who specializes in this genre for Ableton. I use Live 8 Suite.
