How do I mute the audio from interface input?

I keep running into this problem. I plug a mic or instrument (let's say a guitar) directly in to port 1 of my audio interface. In Live, even if the track that has the guitar is deactivated and/or muted, the signal from port 1 still plays audio through my speakers.

1. Why is this happening?

2. How can I mute the signal coming from the input?

Not sure, but it seems like you have an audio interface with a so called 'direct monitoring' function. This means you will hear the signal going through Live, but also the direct signal going through your soundcard.
You should be able to turn this off somewhere in the settings or on the interface itself.
