Compressing Vocals (Makeup button)

hey, i'm a songwriter and was looking at a video on how to mix rap vocals in ableton. as i was watching the guy from the video said he ALWAYS turns off the "makeup" on his compressor. is this something i should do too when compressing vocals and what does this button mean?

A compressor is mostly used to control dynamics of the signal; catch peaks, even out the sound, etc.

When compressing, the signal becomes a bit less loud. To get the signal back to its original loudness, there is a make-up button. So it is used to compensate the loss of "volume".

Using it or not depends on the original signal, the compressor settings and even taste.

So just try what happens and trust your ears.
