Can you use the external instrument plugin without a midi port?

Was looking up a tutorial online and they say you need to plug in midi into the hardweare device you want to use in order to use the external hardware plugin. Do I really need that or can I just plug my device in through a line in?

The External Instrument plugin is only useful when you actually use an external instrument that can be played from Live; and for that you need a way to communicate with the instrument; and that requires a midi interface/connection. The sound of the instrument itself, however, goes back into Live via your audio interface's inputs. So the External Instrument plugin basically combines a midi signal and audio input in one channel. If all you want to do is get a line input signal, all you need is a standard audio track and set the input to "ext in" and select the  corresponding audio input channel(s).
