Best approach to work with raw audio?

Hi. Complete Noob here trying to use Live 8.

My mate recorded a raw audio take with just a vocal and guitar (same track) from I guess a sound desk and passed the file on to me to work on ideas. I'm a keys player.

I want to chop some audio off, and add some basic beats to it and then add a layer of sounds on top. I'd possibly want to edit the arrangement too. It's not for any final work, but to work on ideas. What would be the best approach to work with this in Live 8?
