Ableton sync to arp on ultranova

I am not sure what settings to put on in preferences so that ableton tempo is controlling the tempo and arp of the ultranova. the ultranova is setup ok ie midi in arp and clock source ext auto. Its the ableton midi sync preferences i am unsure about. most are track on and remote on, all syncs are off. my control surface is apc40.

help would be appreciated

I had the same problem and resolved it. The UltraNova follows Ableton's tempo either connected to USB or MIDI.
The most important thing is: Ableton does not steer the tempo while it is stopped. (see the Ultranova's user guide page 38). You need to start the sequencer.

You can observe Ableton's tempo changes in the global settings of the UltraNova. The BPM reading in the ARP settings remains at the last tempo you set for UltraNova's internal clock.

However, I was not able make the Ultranova a 'Sync-Master' for Ableton. It looks like the UltraNova does not send clock data to a DAW, when clock source is set to 'internal'.

    Setup: Ableton: (USB)
    Menu: Options → Preferences
Tab: Midi Sync → Midi Ports
Output: UltraNova (in my case 3-UltraNova)

Make sure to activate 'Sync' in this line.  (I activated Track/Sync/Remote). Ableton will steer UltraNova's tempo with only Sync enabled (Track/Remote 'off').
Just to mention: There might be a port 'Output UltraNova (Automap)'. It has no role here.

    Setup Ableton: (MIDI)
    Menu: Options → Preferences
Tab: Midi Sync → Midi Ports
                                          Output: <Your MIDI Port>

(depends on the MIDI-Port the UltraNova is connected to ; in my case 'Scarlett   6i6 USB')

    Setup the UltraNova: (USB)
    Global → (2 X Next)
Clock Source (either USB, Auto, Ext-Auto)

    Setup the UltraNova: (MIDI)
    Global → (2 X Next)
Clock Source (either Midi, Auto, Ext-Auto)
