Ernesto Malaca, born in Chile with a Mexican heart, is a composer, producer and teacher. With a strong background in DIY electronics and MIDI controller design, coupled with classical music training, his work is informed by the technical and the creative, and rooted in a passion for Latin American aesthetics.
- Mexico City Distrito Federal Mexico
Ernesto started learning music when he was eight years old. He started with electric guitar, aiming to become a guitar virtuoso. Instead he also learnt piano and classical composition, which led him to write, conduct and premiere chamber music when he went to college in Valparaíso, Chile. His first experiences in electronic music were with Puredata and Csound, along with circuit bending and sound art.
Ernesto has also studied pedagogy, becoming a teacher in 2007. Currently, he is the Academic Coordinator of Music Makerspace at G Martell University in Ciudad de Mexico, where he teaches and leads lessons for students to create their own tools for music production, from guitar pedals to synthesizers and MIDI controllers. At the same school, Ernesto teaches in the electronic music department, giving lessons on electronic music fundamentals, composition, remix production using Live and analysis.
Ernesto has used Live since 2008 and it has become his tool of choice for all current projects, including creating electronic dance music, writing music for contemporary dance and installations, live performance art projects, playing live using Push and programming Max patches to control stage lighting and VJ sets. Latin American music has a huge influence on Ernesto’s aesthetic and works.
Ernesto’s method of teaching is based on the needs of his students, and uses their personal interests to motivate them to develop their chosen skill sets. He offers private and one-on-one lessons in Mexico City and online.
