Do i need new hardware?

Hi.

I'm experiencing some problems with high cpu load. Not in OS cpu-monitor. But abletons cpu-meter. I get alot of cracks in the sound, and high cpu load after only adding a few synths, and fx's. My hardware is not brand new, but i really thought it would be more than good enough to handle ableton, since i've tested a few other daw's on this system.

i have 8 gigs of ram.

Windows 7 pro 64bit(Ableton is 32bit)

intle Core i7 960 quad core. 3.20ghz

And a presonus firebox soundcard.

I have tried to do various adjustments with buffersize, sample rate and latency. I have also disabled alot of background processes to free resources, but it doesn't help at all. I adjusted the cpu's clock-speed to 50% (1,6ghz) to check how much worse it got, but abletons cpu-meter showed exactley the same cpu-load, and the cracks in the sound were exactley the same. Is it my hardware that is completeley outdated? Or is the problem maybe elseware?

    Hi!
I`ve just met the same issue as yours! I tried to solve a memory lack problem on a 32 bit Win7 by total hardware upgrade but it is out of any positive effect! More of it - all became worse! I removed Live9 32 bit, WD Raptor 10k rpm, Core2Quad 2.4GHz, 8GB of DDR2 and Win7 32bit and put Live9 64 bit, SSD 256Gb, i7 3.5GHz, 16 GB DDR3 and Win 8.1 64bit instead.
So what I have now? There only TWO midi tracks - one NI MASSIVE and reFX NEXUS2 the other - the moment I started one of basic presets on MASSIVE for a lead and just rised the number of voices from 1 to 6 - Live9 64 bit started cracking, popping and trying to fall on its knees. And this began I`ve even didn`t play the second midi track. Its so SAD. F...K! Live shows me a 40% of CPU usage by just the MASSIVE track - its unbelievable! So I`ve tried the same movements as you. No result. Now I`m thinking about to place back Live 32bit and watch for a while - maybe it`s useful. But I have at the same time a suspicion all this SH....T could happen because of Win 64bit. Why? I`v bought a Novation Launchkey 61 and my Win 8.1 64bit saw it as a properly functioning device just after a HOT plug. In case when I started the PC with Launchkey connected I`ve got a "message" about Launchkey have no driver and won`t work. The cure was a disconnection, reboot and a hot plug. It`s a sad story without a happy end. (((((((((((((

    Hi again!
I`ve found a solution. In my case that was a bad ( =old ) soundcard. It didn`t work properly in  my Win 8.1 mostly because of the driver, though I downloaded it yesterday from the manufacturer site (it supposed to be "a fresh one" for Win 8). The moment I removed this piece of hardwared s....t out of my setup and redirected sound through onboard AC 97 - everything flew up like a flock of birds!
