Controlling ableton via cubase using rewire

Hi,

Perhaps you can help me with this: I am running Cubase 6 with Ableton 7 as slave using Rewire. All well and good. Within Ableton I have a synth and effects chain with the wet/dry control mapped to a macro controller using the instrument rack. Whilst Ableton is happy to receive midi note information and Cubase receive the audio from Ableton flawlessly I am trying to achieve one further objective with no positive outcome thus far.

The macro controller in Ableton is assigned to the wet/dry levels of the effects chain I have set up. I am trying to figure a way of automating this macro control within Cubase.  Obviously you could write the automation within Ableton itself however, I would rather keep everything in the Cubase project view.

I have tried the following within Cubase: Creating a midi track with the output assigned to the Ableton synth with the required automation written in. I have, for all sensible reason I can think of, matched the midi channel and cc controller numbers to match the macro controller in Ableton. Although I have a sneaking feeling this makes no difference. In essence, I want Cubase to control a macro in Ableton albeit using an automated midi track. Is this possible? If not..can you think of an alternative solution that may achieve the same outcome? I hope this makes sense and if I can clarify any further I would be happy to try. Thanks. Matt

Those are Live parameters and are not accessible through CC data sent through the tracks to Live.

Traditionally in Live (without ReWire), if you want to control those through MIDI you need to enable 'Remote' in MIDI preferences for whatever controller you're interested in, and then use the MIDI Mapping mode (cmd+m) to assign the note or CC to your parameter.

I don't know much about using Live as a ReWire slave, but if you can get your Cubase tracks to show up as MIDI controllers in Live's preferences, you might be able to assign them that way. If not, you might be able to use some kind of MIDI loopback program (MIDI-OX on windows, MIDI IAC on OSX) to send MIDI to Live thorugh a virtual device from Cubase. A bit of a hack, but conceptually possible.

    Best of luck!

    Hi Bob,

Thanks very much for taking the trouble to write back. I will certainly investigate around the areas you point out. My understanding is clearer that these elements in Live are not accessible via CC data using Rewire. Am curious to now see how I might get a Cubase track to show up as a Midi Controller in Lives preferences menu. Not thought of that!

The last point regarding midi loop back is one I think would be most viable. This way Cubase acts as Master in Rewire whilst simultaneously sending CC commands via Midi OX. This way complete automation of Live would be possible as well as the benefits of Rewire!

I'll let you know how I get on!

The way round this problem is to use "midi-yoke". There are restrictions but it does allow parameter control in ableton from cubase using automation. Remarkable really. What you learn when you "look under the hood"!

    Thanks

    Matt.
