Best hardware synth for newbie..

Post by boro » Fri Apr 06, 2007 1:15 am

any ideas? I've been fiddling with the operator demo in live, and I'm thinking more and more I'd like to try out a hardware synth of some kind.

I have an axiom25 if need be for a keyboard controller...

I'm looking for knobs (lol)... not complicated controls (your idea of complicated will vary from mine, I'm sure heh). I'm a drummer, I'm impatient, and I like tangible surfaces.

I've been looking at the korg electribe mx.

prefer to keep the cost down somewhat.

I'd get the Roland SH-201 if I were you....or maybe a used Alesis Ion.

you just need to focus.
you just need to delve into one architecture and come to terms with it.

I did that with a Yamaha CS-5, which is old skool, but the SH-201 looks good.
And, for me, so does the Dave Smith Evolver.

It's all about what goes where and what does what, and, most importantly, do I get it and does it sound right...

Korg MS2000 also comes in rack version... I just say a keyboard version for sale on Craigslist for $450 also has a decent vocoder....

Also Rolands JP8080/8000 (heyboard version maybe) I do not know much about this synth but it is in the same price range as the MS200 whicjh I own....

I'd like to say I agree with that, but I dont have the time or the patience to learn a difficult interface just because it sounds better than some other synth.

I'll second the recommendation for a jp-8000. Dope synth imho. Or maybe maybe cop a used juno 106? That'd be a nice synth to start out on.

If you want PRO hardware synth gear thats fat as hell, go Studio Electronics and dont waste your money on guitar center joke synths & romplers.

Studio Electronics ATC-X is #1 among most producers, its got real (non emulated) Analog filter sections of Moog, Oberheim, ARP and Rolands TB303
and has a dedicated input so you can run your
computers vsti's through it and get that analog warmth and punch when you want it 24/7... Aswell as a ring mod input for more synth mayhem..

yeah I'm not a producer. I'm a kid with a drum kit and a want a synth/sequencer to play overtop of.

it doesnt take more than a few minutes of scanning reviews online to come across a bunch of people who talk about how 'digital sucks... analog is the best blah blah"

please spare me that shit. not to sound like a prick, but I dont need pro gear.

you can get a juno-6 for a couple hundred bucks or cheaper...

no MIDI, but -great- sounds and I can't imagine an easier analog synth to learn.

edit: oh wait, for some reason I thought you specifically wanted an analog synth, if that's not a priority than there might be better synths to get.

although not too many for $200...

I picked a second hand Virus A on ebay there before christmas for about 400 euro, lots of knobs and great fun.

There's a Virus B on ebay now 340 euro with about 2 days left.
