My Live 7.x wishlist (or why I haven't upgraded yet...)

Post by robbmasters » Thu Mar 20, 2008 9:23 am

When Live 5 was announced, I wasn't expecting to upgrade.
Then at the last minute they added cross-fader curves (which was really important to me at the time).
So I upgraded at once...

When Live 6 was announced, I wasn't expecting to upgrade.
Then I discovered that MIDI mapping a track via the playback indicator meant that the clip got selected too.
So I upgraded at once...

When Live 7 was announced, I wasn't expecting to upgrade.
It seems that there's really nothing in there that would make me want to do so this time.
So I still haven't upgraded...

Therefore, given that I understand that Ableton take note of what users on these forums are asking for, I thought I should put together a list of things I'd like to see in the next version of Live - and hope that it's Live 7.x rather than 8.0 (as that could possibly happen a bit sooner...)
  1. Professional quality offline time-stretching algorithm

Live's time-stretching (warping) algorithms all introduce noticeable artefacts. This may be acceptable for real time use, but it's not for acceptable for rendering final tracks. Until Ableton introduce a professional quality offline time-stretching algorithm, I don't think it can be considered a serious DAW. I'm really surprised this was left out of Live 7.0. I don't see the point of a 64-bit audio engine when your sound quality is going to be let down by your time-stretching.

I wasn't keen when Ableton started moving away from Live being a performance tool towards it being a DAW. I've come around to that idea now, but it needs a professional quality offline time-stretching algorithm before I can seriously use it as a DAW.

This is one thing that definitely would get me to upgrade to the next version of Live.
  2. Better quality real-time time-stretching algorithm

OK, I know I've just said that it's warping algorithms may be acceptable for real time use. But they're still not great. How is it that a CDJ-1000, for example, does a much better job of real-time time-stretching? I feel like Cubase's real-time time-stretching is better than Live's too. This used to be Live's USP. But where it once lead the way, it now lags behind.
  3. MIDI (and key) mapping of EVERYTHING

Every function needs to be MIDI (and key) mappable. There are plenty of things it's tricky if not impossible to do via MIDI because you can't click the loop brace (for example) via MIDI.
For points 1 and/or 2, hopefully Ableton were just waiting for élastique v2, which came out about a week ago... (See also http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=77178, http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=87507, http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=83940.)

I'll probably add more later...
