Simpler doesn't one-shot?

Post by jamester » Fri Nov 30, 2007 7:28 pm

So I'm playing with the Drum Rack and it is impressive, but I have a couple questions:

1) Does Simpler one-shot? I've never messed with Simpler for drums, but I can't seem to get it to ignore note-off. This means that everytime I bang out a beat, I have to go in and check to make sure all of my hits have triggered for their full length? That's ridiculous, what's the story here?

2) Follow-up to #1: If I get Sampler, can that be set to be the default instead of Simpler, and will Sampler give me this? It seems to me that Impulse still offers superior controls for drums over Simpler...does Sampler offer more?

3) Finally, as far as saving Drum Racks (I'm in Demo mode so I can't test this): If you have a rack setup with track-out effects, can this be saved as a preset? With Impulse you could only save the kit, not any additional tracks/routing unless it was saved as a project. I'm wondering if this has been improved with the rack's built-in "track folder"?

Thanks for any help!

1) You can just set the release to the max. That should ensure the whole sample always plays.
2)Yes, Sampler can be set to the default instead of simpler for drum racks.
3)The drum racks saves everything in it. Inserts, sends, all effects, and internal routing.

Thanks RJ, helps a lot! :)

Indeed, the Release is the key to one-shot, I was just going by the "Length" control! Now I'm wondering if there's a way to make the Release 100% by default...but good to know it can be done anyways.

Take a an empty simpler, adjust the release to 100%, drag it back to the folder browser and call it something like "mysimpler". Just use that as your default

Or if you are on Live 7 Drag the Simpler (or any instrument for that matter) with your desired settings into the
Live Library->defaults->instruments folder

Thanks guys, yes I know how to make a preset, I meant default for the Drum Racks. But I see that there is a "Save as default preset" for the Drum Rack, so I assume that is the key to it?

IOW: I drag a hit onto a pad, and the Simpler comes up automatically with the Release at 100%.

Yes that's good to know, I fogot about this new feature in L7.

However, unfortunately it doesn't seem to apply to the Simplers in Drum Rack, only "stand alone" Simplers... :-/

Hi,

You can also use the "Note Length" MIDI Device to create One-Shots for any device in Live.

So I take it there's no way to make this happen?

Shame, but it's always something isn't it... :?

THANK YOU!!!

That's exactly what I needed. If anyone's also wondering, here's the answer:
- Advanced cases: choose between Sampler or Simpler, with custom settings, for:
[1] when dropping a sample or multiple samples on a Drum Rack. Create an empty Sampler or Simpler, set its parameters as you like, and manually drag that device (without sample) to Library/Defaults/Dropping Samples/On Drum Rack
Interestingly, my Defaults folder didn't have a couple of the sub-folders mentioned in that thread (like this one), so I never would have been able to figure this out. I created them myself, and things seem fine...but now I'm wondering if there's anything else important I'm missing in my Library.

I started fresh with the Library this time...cleared all content and whatnot except for the effects presets. But I didn't mess with this stuff, it simply wasn't there to begin with!
