Piano roll audition button >> shocked! .. I never knew...

Post by R.J.Dubya » Wed Nov 14, 2007 11:14 am

OMG, I'm so embarrassed. I didn't know it was there until I was messing around with the Live beta! I guess I've been making most of my beats by playing the keyboard or sequencingin Logic or whatever and using loops, and I never noticed. It was something that always bothered me about Live's piano roll, that when you clicked a key on the piano roll, it didn't play the note (or so I thought). So I didn't use it for drum sequencing much before, as I always like to be able to check the sound on each lane when sequencing.

So I discovered it tonight playing with drum racks and was about to come and post on forges thread about non-hyped cool new feaures in Live 7! Luckily I checked Live 6 first and just about crapped myself in embarrassment.

What a great discovery! And I've been using it for years! This will make beat making even that much better in Live.

You guys ever had similar shocking discoveries?

I'm sure this was in live 4!
command (or maybe cntrl) click on a piano key would play the note.

I'm still looking for a way to put an empty midi clip into the arrangment view without having to go to session, double click an empty slot and then copy paste across

I worked here for a year before I realized that you can enter midi map mode, enter one midi keyboard note and hold it down, and enter another midi keyboard note to play that clip on a range of notes

(also works with the Chain selector ;) )

Another demo crowd pleaser: click on the word Length, Start, End in Clip view.

Showed another person here about dragging MP3s direct from iTunes the other day too.

Always something new to learn...

hehehe.. a confession thread, nice..

disable draw mode,
select a range of notes,
hold the command key,
drag a straight line in the velocity lane:

a perfect straight velocity ramp..!

glad I found that gem after quite some time of drawing velocity rolls by hand

Select where and the length you want and use INSERT/Insert Midi Clip (menu at top).

Left click and drag in the midi track of your choosing. Right click this new selected area and select 'insert midiclip'.

Actually someone posted recently about midi "note stretch". I had no idea you could do that either. Pretty cool.

Creating MIDI clips in Arrangement view:

Some people have already said you can right click... the shortcut is, highlight the region you want to create the clip in. Ctrl+Shift+M. Done.

I just found this out as well about a month ago. I couldn't believe I have been creating and dragging from session for so long!!! What a time saver.
