s'up?

Best to analyse your favourite tracks and see where the drums hit in the beat.

Use your Impulse instrument in live to trigger your samples. Download some kick drums and some snares and hats and load them into Impulse.

Then, in session view choose a clip and draw in your hits and see if you can recreate those beats.

Try starting with a kick on the 1 and 3 and snare on the 2 and 4 of the bar, then move them about to get the hip hop feel going. then drop in your hats and some cymbals etc. and build your loop.

I'm afraid it's difficult to go into detail and drums is all about getting the right power and dynamics. So you''ll need to get your compressors and EQs out.

If you struggle with that to start with, get some loops in and chuck them into clips and just fire them off!

Have some fun with some of Lives effects and mash up those beats with beat repeat and the auto filter.

Use kicks, snare, hihat, percussion, claps and farts.

check the tips and tricks sticky, there are links to many many many free sample sites.

Like Q-tip says, "The boom bip, da boom boom bip", that's the main hip hop beat. Snare on the 2 and 4, kicks on the 1 and 3 and then there's a higher pitched kick just before the '1'. Hi hats can just be done on every 8th note (1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and) <-- 8 hi hats per 4 beats. There are lots of hip hop beats, but IMO they all start with 'boom bip, da boom boom bip'.

You can/should edit your drum sounds to have variation in how hard they're hit, like a REAL drummer. Also, turning off quantise, especially for hi hats gives a good human feel to your drums.

When you get your head around Live more, make drum kits so that entire sections of your keyboard are a drum type, like 5 keys together that are kicks, then 5 snares, etc, then you can play drums by hitting your hands, not just your fingers on the keyboard, you can get nice layered drums this way.

Here are some good resources for free drum samples:

This company specializes in hiphop samples: http://www.modernbeats.com/free_sounds.php. This is the free stuff, but their samples are reasonably priced.

A bunch of free stuff here to check out: http://www.hollowsun.com/downloads/index.html

What better place to get free sounds, than FreeSound?
http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/index.php

Like 808 sounds? Look here: http://machines.hyperreal.org/manufactu ... 8/samples/. Browse around this site, there are samples all over it.

You don't have to limit yourself to samples, try out some free plugins. For example: http://www.kvraudio.com/get/367.html
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/307.html
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/435.html

Now go drop some beatz.

Study up on different styles of Hip-Hop, for example take a Hip-Hop song that you like and try to figure out how they made the song. Try to figure out what instruments were used. Try to recreate the song (for practice). For young producers just starting out that is a good exercise. Another tip I would give is to listen to some of the different elements in Hip-Hop which are:

Kick
Snare
Bass
Hi Hat
Sample

Work on drum programming either in Live 6 (which is what you mentioned you have) or whatever else you have at your disposal. Another tip is whatever instrument/software you are primarily going to use to produce your music learn it inside out! Learn every single function and learn it better than most people, master that instrument/software. By doing that you will constantly be progressing and learning more and more about producing and creating music... And it doesn't matter what instrument/software it is just learn it very well it doesn't have to be the latest MPC or the latest software, NO just master at least 1 music instrument...

Work on creating your own melodies, understand how to sample, how to chop, how to select your samples, how to be creative with your samples, how not to sound like everybody else lol.

There is really a lot to producing Hip-Hop or any other type of music. A lot of Hip-Hop beats sounds simple but really it can be very hard to make something simple sound so good without it sounding simple to your audience....

yeah sure Hip-Hop and sampling are sort of married but don't rely on samples alone to make beats or else you'll end up sounding like all the other millions of wannabee Hip-Hop producers that just go looking for a hot soul sample and slap a drum loop to it and that's it... Do something different something unique

matterafack lots of current hip hop styles have almost zero external samples other than roms for sounds. for instance, my current personal favorite, rick rock, beets are 100% loop/phrase sample free. the 90's are over.

Golden Era hip hop is simply timeless. It will always move you. Its like saying Miles Davis or John Coltrane or David Axelrod compositions are out of style because they are old. I was just listening to Main Ingredient and Mecca and the Soul Brother from Pete and CL and man those albums are near 12-14 years old and they still sound sick 'til this day. Theres two types of hiphop, dope shit...and wack shit. Hip Hop(in general) is not on the radio.

To the original poster, it might sound cliche but start hitting up crates. You dont even have to buy em right now. Ask family members (old ones) especially. Knowing a lot of the old joints is not only good for samples but also to get some knowledge as to what a lot of the culture is based on.

Get good with chopping samples in addition to adding your own flavor with synths, vsts, etc. BUT DONT GET INTO THAT WACK 2 FINGER MELODY KEYBOARD CRAP. I love synths, own one myself, but what is considered "hiphop" today is so mediocre its hilarious. Watered down garbage for 14 year olds. Chicken noodle soup?? LOL.

Learning to chop samples is key. Sample based hip hop can still be extremely fresh to the ear depending on who is making it. Don't ever feel you have to resort to bubble gum MTV TRL garbage stuff (unless you actually like it).

If you just HAVE TO purchase drums, I recommend copping them through Croup. http://www.myspace.com/croup These are the best when you think about how many sounds you get versus the price, and the sounds are very useful. Listen to the beats on his page.

Learn to program drums with velocity and feel.
-Try not to always quantize your hats and change up the velocity
-Try some velocity changes with your kicks
-Turn off snap/quantize and learn to program a little loose.

These are just some ideas. It all depends on the song as a whole, as sometimes you might want a "tighter" feel.

At the end of the day whether you are stuck in 1988, 1995, or 2007, if the music is wack, its wack.
