Can An Extremely Fast LFO Damage an Analog Synth?

Post by penguinpajamas » Fri May 30, 2014 3:35 am

Hey guys! So the topic pretty much covers my question, but I'm wondering if an LFO running at extremely high speeds can damage or ware an analog synth, maybe if left for a long time. Maybe it's just because the sound is so intense, but it sounds damaging to me for some reason.

Sorry if I sound like an idiot, but the info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Charlie

A really fast LFO is a VCO.

seriously though, i'd be more worried about the amplitude damaging equipment vs the frequency.

analog synths are usually at a higher level than line level devices, so shouldn't be a problem there.

The noises you can get when using audio rate signals as modulators on an analog synth are my favorite kind of noises.
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

There is such a wide range of patchable synths with different specs that it is absolutely possible to patch something up that damages your synth or part of it. Its always best to check specs first to make sure the voltages youre outputting dont exceed the max input limits.

You might know that but I just wanted to add that for people who may read this in the future and think "cool that guy seems to imply patching synths together wont damage them."

why should it damage them?

depending on the modulation destination (FM /AM).. you'll get different types of sound...

I wouldn't see why. They design their rates to work with their system, so it shouldn't damage your synth. Now your speakers (and even more importantly your ears) is a different story.

No, different frequencies will not damage the synth. Only too high of voltage/current which does not correlate with frequency.
There will become a point at which the synth will not be able to react or change at that speed but it wont damage it.
