what to use to wirelessly listen to music from a laptop?
so what does one use to listen to music from the laptop on a nice hifi or similar without having to put cables through the living room from the desk to the other side where the sofa is? Blue-tooth speakers?

iTunes to Apple TV or AirPort plugged into a stereo.
Depending on your allegiance this is either a brilliant answer or highly offensive.

Thus, being suggested Apple gear should neither surprise nor offend him. Hell, I think we should be offended if he even had a different allegiance.

Hm, and is there any other (e.g. cheaper) possibility? I moved into this new flat, where my workdesk is on the other side of the big room where I want to listen to music. and I don't want to put up cables.

But that's not any cheaper than the Apple options. An Apple TV is $99 (US). He wants cheaper than that.

If the laptop has Bluetooth that can send streaming audio (A2DP) then you can get a small Bluetooth audio receiver that can be plugged into the hifi. I have a Sony Ericsson MBR-100 (a discontinued model) but companies such as Belkin make similar things.

This may be more practical for you with a spare device like a phone or ipod, but something with wireless and an app that uses uPNP to receive the wireless stream, then use a 1/8" to RCA plug to your stereo.

Any older, used iPod along with Home Sharing turned on in iTunes would be fine. An Airport Express is $80 I think, and that's pretty much made for what you want too.

great, now I have some clues how to do that. I guess I will get an used Ipod and a nice little stereo during after-xmas-sales and then rig up my new house. ho ho ho.
