Orgin of the Loon sample?
OK so what is with the Loon sample that has been used in Techno, Jungle and D&B for the last 20 years? I have heard it about a million times and have always wondered.
Anyone here know the origin of that sample?

Apparently it's "originally" (until the bird's lawyers get in touch) from an Emulator II library disc.
Disc #22 "Wind Chimes / Birds / Streams", Patch 02 - Bird Stream.

YES! I knew that someone here would have this extremely obscure bit of information stashed in there tech nerd head (no offence)!massenmedium wrote:Apparently it's "originally" (until the bird's lawyers get in touch) from an Emulator II library disc.

Thanks
Re: Orgin of the Loon sample?
the bird actually passed away a few years ago. the rights to his music were bought by a small record label who went out of business. that label's entire catalog was purchased by another record company who were eventually bought out by Larrikin Music.
a lawsuit has been filed.

Very cool of you sir. Thanks for posting it up. I tried de-clipping it but for some reason it will not let me save the file. Strange.

Re: Orgin of the Loon sample?
hmmm...no reason for that in the sample, just a .wav
Re: Orgin of the Loon sample?
Really? I thought it started life as an Akai sample. I first heard it when I got my S900.massenmedium wrote:Apparently it's "originally" from an Emulator II library disc.
Perhaps Akai "acquired" their sample library from Emu.....
I reckon it was the S900 that brought the Loon into the mainstream though.

Not sure about the "mainstream" distinction, I imagine most EII users would have to have been doing fairly well commercially.
But yeah certainly as far as house / rave music goes it makes sense that a lot of people would have been using Akais. 808 State had a big pile of gear though I think. Probably robbed most of it off big acts playing in Manchester. j/k
