Multichannel Routing Device - Spatializing stereo sounds?

Post by rutgermuller » Tue Apr 12, 2011 9:25 am

Right now it seems that if I input a stereo sound into the 'Multichannel Nodes' devices it gets sent out to the different speakers as a mono signal. Am I right?

- What would be the easiest way to move the stereo sound around, keeping the stereo pairs close to eachother?

- Would it be interesting to work with a variable spread of the stereo sound over an x number of speakers?

No ideas/suggestions?

I guess simply using two tracks for a stereo sound with on one track a utility on LEFT and the other a utility on RIGHT...

Anybody working with maxforlive and surround yet?

Interesting :-)

Spent such a large chunk of 2010 working on freelance, collaborative and personal projects in surround sound. The patch presented in this video is like a verbatim hybrid of two designs I used.I love the simplicity of the pictslider as means of representing the changes. I also appreciate knowing some vernacular for this constant power method (non-expontential, I take it as meaning.)

I find that the send approach is very effective for a work with a limited number of original voice sources, but at least with one long-term project I have, spacializing more than say twenty or so sources starts to become taxing. There are so many methods though. Experimentation in this area is extremely fun and exciting for me! One limitation that frustrates me, however, is the seemingly arbitrary limit on the number of return tracks. This does not, imo, mesh with the expansive nature of m4l (file this under the same category as the crippling of "send~" objects across tracks.)

To return to the op's request, I have found that there is one fantastic aspect to routing stereo pairs: using the pan as a means of determining elevation. (dr00ol!!!)

I believe I have some code for a quad and octo/channel variant here: http://ibrill.com/blog/?page_id=441 the code is effective for the piece but is a bit rudimentary. The eight channel version will demonstrate the panning thing I described.

I am working on a collaborative project where we spatialize data, translate it into audio and sum it in max(.app), and send it via Soundflower to X number of channels in Live. My favorite solution to date. Sooper easy and mega-effective.

I am excited about looking into this new spatialization patch! Thanks for reminding me it was released!

i am working on a 'commercial' / share-ready version of my send based spatialization patches, and they kind of support stereo signals. but i am not sure when they will be ready....

Yeah, also check the panning tools from rovbert.

Distance is essential, maybe ;)

....great news anyway! Hope that live surround sound will get more and more accessible for everyone to play with in these times.

I was just wondering if anyone has made this work with some customizing?

To make the included MfL multichannel devices work with stereo input and output.
