Last Upgrade For Me
Last Upgrade For Me
I just decided to stop by the Ableton online shop and just realized the cost of Live 8 Suite, 133,500.00 Jamaica Dollars . As a home studio operator and hobbyist I just cant afford to deprive my family of that type of money.
I know the upgrade is much cheaper, but the rate at which the price is moving I know I will never be able to afford another version after this.
This is a shame because I have been with Live since L1.

The obsession with upgrades is perplexing. Anyone should be able to produce, mix, and compose music with the setup they have. But we all seem to stive for an improvement in workflow, get bug fixes, and increase the number of tools as new features come to market. I am resigned to the fact that I am a Gear/Software Junkie and will eat peanut butter and jelly if I had to in order to keep up with updates. How much is $133.5k dollars in USD anyway?
Re: Last Upgrade For Me
i think he's mistaken. it should be about $13,350.00 Jamaica dollars for the upgrade, which would be about $160 give or take. the exchange rate right now is $1 USD to $86.65 JMD.

No, the upgrade would be 16,000.00 Jamaican (189.00 USD). I am talking the full L8 Suite not the upgrade, this would cost a first time buyer US$ 1500.00 (Ja$133,500.00). This is for serious producers and completely out of my league.McQ714 wrote:i think he's mistaken. it should be about $13,350.00 Jamaica dollars for the upgrade, which would be about $160 give or take. the exchange rate right now is $1 USD to $86.65 JMD.

I'm done for quite some time, if I can't get it done with Live 8 and Maschine it wasn't meant to. Unless this figment known as share comes to light, that might be worth it.
Ableton 9, Feeltune Rhizome, Focusrite Pro, Mpk249....
Re: Last Upgrade For Me
Been a user since Live 3 and still haven't spent the amount of money that my first Roland Groovebox cost me. Not sure when you guys got into this game, but 1500$ buys you a hell of a lot of sounds these days.
With some companies you get more than with others.
Try going back a decade or so when we had to buy expansion boards for an already costly synth. Add the mixer, effects, etc..
This isn't even a "back in the day" kind of thing. I'm still in my twenties..
And honestly, if you're hobbyist like you say, you probably don't need several gigabytes of orchestra sounds, a physical modeling synth for bell and guitar sounds and several other instruments may be redundant if the quality of free or cheap alternative plugins suits your needs better.
We're all spoiled for choice. The trick is to know what you actually need. Buying the suite isn't going to get you a soundcard and/or controller which would be nice to have with 1500$ of software and sounds.
Re: Last Upgrade For Me
I stopped after 5.2. After years of this, I realized I was becoming an Ableton Subscriber, not a user.
I much prefer the Propellerheads upgrade timetable...major upgrades every 2-3 years. That seems reasonable. Sending $160+ to Ableton every year was starting to make me feel like I was going to a hooker on a yearly trip to Vegas.

I mean, there is no doubt that Live is good. In fact it is definitely better than most of the top DAW's around, but it seems that the Abes are leaving us behind.
I can just hear people like Tone saying "well get yourself a Lite version". The truth is that although I am a hobbyist, I still hope to breakthrough one day, and somehow, using the Lite version is just not the same. In addition, it is really hard to give up when one has been a subscriber for so long.

You're kidding right? What other DAWs do you have experience with? Live is not the best by far but I don't want to open that can of worms again. Suffice it to say that it is your personal opinion.evon wrote:I mean, there is no doubt that Live is good. In fact it is definitely better than most of the top DAW's around.....

+1 for live 8 not suite 8. And all the free or cheap vsts you need. plus any solid hardware, soundcard/controller. ect.
