no one seems to have mentioned this yet - you can use live's session view as an arpeggiator on steroids... program a sequence into a midi clip, then go into midi map mode and select the clip, then hold down the lowest note on your midi keyboard, followed by the highest (while still holding the lowest)... then change the clip quantize launch option from global quantize to none (or 16ths or 8ths or whatever depending on how you like to play) and the launch mode to gateand now the clip will launch with whatever note you hit as the route of your sequence...

Then you have full control on what notes are played and at what velocity, and even glide by overlapping notes... Throw a scale plugin after it and everything will stay in one key... or add a normal arp plug for more craziness - etc etc etc...

add in midi feedback between two channels and play with the overdub button and you have a form of generative/interactive music

Here is a link to a tread were I described how to do a (fully) programmable arpeggiator in Live. It does not cover all needs but if you want to build melodic a programmable (Like FM8, Zebra...) arpeggiator it is the best I could find so far.

live's arp is genious for non-melodic stuff (like rolling drum edits, sample mangling, etc...)

i rarely use it to generate melodies.
