Tiger vs. Leopard vs. Live

Post by oevboev » Fri Mar 14, 2008 11:35 pm

Ok, got a question for you mac users out there.
One of my friends recently became the proud owner of a macbook pro with Leopard installed.
However, she worries about the supposed fact that Leopard doesn't run too well with Photoshop, Flash, After Effects and of course, our beloved Ableton Live.
In fact she consider downgrading to Tiger....

So my question is,

Have any of you experienced glitches, bugs, and so on with Leopard running the aforementioned programmes?

CS3 and Leopard

Post by bathyscaaf » Sat Mar 15, 2008 1:36 am

Hi,
I'm running Adobe Creative Suite 3 on Leopard without any problems. There was an issue with Quicktime renders in After Effects right after the AppleTV announcement 'cause Apple monkeyed around with Quicktime to get the movie rentals DRM set up.
Apple released a fix within the week. I think that was both Leopard and Tiger, though.

I'm also running Live without a problem save the processor stepping issue (I have a Santa Rosa chipset).

Will it be Live 6 or 7?

Can't speak for Live 7 since I haven't upgraded yet, but I've been running Live 6.0.10 on Leopard for months now with no problems. I haven't noticed any difference since I upgraded from Tiger (10.4.11) to Leopard.
I'm using a Macbook Core2Duo 2.0ghz with 2gb ram, 160gb 5400 drive.

Both the internal soundcard and my Motu Ultralite work fine with Leopard and Live.
Just make sure you've got the most recent Leopard compatible drivers for whatever soundcard you have.

There's a slight performance hit due to Airport in Leopard, but you have to be running higher CPU projects to even notice it. In normal day to day stuff I doubt it'll be an issue. CS2 has always been kind of slow on Macs, regardless of Tiger or Leopard, CS3 is much, much better though.

If she already has Leopard installed, I'd say just try it for awhile and see if it goes ok, if not, then start thinking about downgrading. No need to go through all that if there's no need though.

Live 7 doesn't run as well as 6 on Leopard, but you can't blame Leopard for that, it's all 7. 7 isn't as smooth on my PPC G5 either. Beyond that, I'm sure any glitches I'm experiencing will be resolved soon, most companies nowadays tend to get it right soon enough. 8)
