Headphone recommendations?

Post by celticdale » Wed Aug 04, 2004 7:01 pm

I would like to purchase a really good set of headphones. I don't like the Bose headphones. Can anyone recommend a good set of studio quality headphones that are great sounding and comfortable, too?

Thanks in advance.

You are going to get a million replies...everybody has their favorites. In fact, do a search on this forum; there was someone recently looking for headphones with which to mix on the road, my opinion was in there somewhere.

But also, go listen...Grados, Sennheisers are good choices.

Thanks. I did a search and didn't come up with a million hits, only 175. :D I looked thru many of them and see that there are many that are fragile. I'm willing to search thru the opinions. Thank you for your input. This is a really nice forum.

Check out this thread...it may help...

http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic. ... headphones

From what I know: Grado's are great, even the lower priced ones, SR80s and SR125s always get a good nod, but they aren't closed. This might be important depending on application and where you will be using them as closed headphones don't let as much ambient noise in, or music out....

High end Sennheisers are also good choices, HD580s, HD600s. I am not absolutely "thrilled" with either of mine (HD265s - a little muddy, HD280s - a little too much high end, not quite enough bass), but they get the job done and sound great for different purposes, and they were considerably cheaper.

Someone in the thread above liked AKGs, and I think that the Senn HD25pro are supposed to be excellent at a decent price point.....

So this is my opinion....hope it helps.

i have a DT 100 for about 5 years & i am very very very satified, there is a reason why there is at least one pair of dt 100 in every studios.
a good point about it is every pieces can be bought separatly , good if it breaks down (apart for the plug i have never had to do any repairs on it)

I'm using Sennheiser HD25 1s, they're absolutely brilliant for the price and have a very good range. Trouble is they're like wearing a G-clamp on your head and can go so loud you could damage your hearing very easily.

I love em though.

I use the Sony MDR-7505. They're comfortable and seem to give you exactly what's there.

I just got me the AKG k271.
I love it. It really gives me whats there. They went for 170€ wich i think is reasonable. I also listened to the new KRK monitors and tryed them along with the headphone, it sounded really nice.
The akg's also have this feature that if you take them off the sound stops. and it lets almost no noise through.

i second the beyerdynamics770 (closed)----

i have to wear headphones for 8-10 hours a day and they are still comfortable enough that i put them on when i get home!

the lowend is amazingly clear too, i trust them with every mix!

I second the Sennheiser HD25's. Yes they are quite tight, but they sound f'n AWESOME and have great isloation. For me the great thing about them is you can accurately judge bass levels on them.

I used DT-100s for ages - they're like the NS-10s of the headphone world - totally flat so you rely on your mixing rather than the equipment, but it was like having my brain sucked out of mey ears with a sink plunger after a while - they blick out all sound though

I ended up 'upgrading' to the DT-250s which are pretty much the same speakers I believe but softer padding and ALOT more comfortable to wear and I'm MUCH happier
