Kapture - smooth transitions

Post by Grappadura » Wed Apr 06, 2011 9:07 am

Just saw the vid of Kapture http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PV3pfQFt ... ure=relmfu and I was thinking it would be really cool if the altered parameters from scene to scene could be switched not instantly, but over a definable period of time. Any ideas on how to?

here here! Not just a Global time, but definable times set per preset.

While we're on the topic, how the hell is this NOT part of Ableton natively? THIS should be built in right up top with the transport. I for one am getting tired of having to come up with 'work arounds' all the time.

havent tried Kapture, but pattrstorage should do the trick.

something like this maybe?

Actually, morpher just does what it says on the tin. Which is morphing from one snapshot to another. Though you could achieve the effect by controlling the XY parameter with an LFO or a Clip envelope I suppose.

What you need is a glide effect. In Max it is usually done using the line object. Go from this value to that value over a period of time.
But it gets more complicated, each parameter has a different range. And buttons usually flip over at value 64.
So you need a custom line for each parameter.
I guess Kapture uses a lot of javascript. So I can't really help with the code there. JS isn't my kind of magic.
I could probably add it to the Morpher at some point though. With 16 dials this is much easier to achieve using Max objects. It only needs to be done once.
Maybe somebody else has a better solution. For mine you'll need some patience. Flowdesigner has a nice example of using the line object for this.

thank you kindly gentleman, its gonna take me a long time to get into this stuff as much as required for this task, if I ever venture on it. right now I can only blatantly ask others to write stuff for me, but I hope I´ll get into it.

no, you can assign WHEN it flips. pattrstorage is incredibly powerful. every single transition can have its own transition curve type and / or threshold of 'flipping'. you edit it all in the pattrstorage client window. you can even dynamically reassign these types. i spend longer editing/testing transition types than i do building the whole thing. i have not got around to looking at kapture yet, probably because of all the nauseating and obnoxious videos/ hype surrounding it, but i presume the js code is just calling pattrstorage functions. for mini and simpler versions, much more efficient (but without gliding outthebox) just look at the poletti device randomisers etc. personally i love your (hoffman's) macros device(s) as well. caveat - pattrstorage is a lot more powerful in max standalone than it is in maxforlive - there are a lot more hoops to jump through with mfl.

Yeah. Been there too, I actually built a whole morpher for Analog, but I'm still trying to figure out why the sound gets cut. You need a custom interpolation mode for a lot of various parameters. Filter types for example, you don't want those jumping through all the settings in the middle.

A little secret about the latest Macro device. Its not actually using pattrstorage. Pattrstorage doesn't keep the ID's persistent and I'm not going back to dealing with paths. So I made a little live.object matrix in a 64 voice poly. Surprisingly light on the system for 1024 live.objects ;)

Personally I'm finding that I don't need to work around any of this ID/Path stuff anymore. Comparing some of my 1.0 devices with their current versions, I got like 80% less code and 10 times the functionality.
I realize there are other function for pattrstorage, but beyond morphing and storing multiple sets of data I don't really need it that much anymore. At least not for my current projects.

FWIW this also happens with Kapture Pad's (iPhone) track morphing and analog.

Yeah, its definitely a Analog bug. But I haven't been able to narrow it down yet.
I was originally working on a full Morpher for the Operator, but unfortunately I can't change all the settings. With Analog, you can set all of the 128 parameters on the device.
