Julien Bayle is an independent, multidisciplinary artist based in France, working at the juncture of sound and vision. He merges visual art, music composition and physical approaches to sound art by creating installations and audio/visual live performances.
- Marseille France
Julien Bayle’s work is based on both experiments and programming, and guided by concepts of time expansion and contraction. His interests in microsound and granular synthesis have recently pushed him to expand his work by opening up a new way of including field recording-based sounds into his practice.
Through a positive-nihilist kind of deconstruction of processes, structures and results, he seeks to depict the complexity of society and a world saturated by meaningless information. He describes his work as “located at the border between his inner world and the world”, and this constantly shifting boundary represents his vision at a specific moment in time.
He performs and exhibits his work internationally at festival and galleries such as MIRA Festival in Spain, ELEKTRA in Canada, Todays Art in the Netherlands, ACT Festival in South Korea, Day for Night in the US, the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires, the David Roberts Art Foundation in London, and more.
He teaches creative technology and new media art as a guest professor in various art schools in Europe and beyond. He facilitated the launch of one of the few Ableton Certified Centers at the home of one of his more prestigious collaborators: The sound research lab Laboratoire de Mécanique et Acoustique in Marseille, France.
He founded and led the now defunct art label Bordille Records with François Larini, worked closely with and records for Canadian imprint Yatra Arts, and was among the selected artists for SHAPE Network.
In 2017, he founded and launched the label vøid, for editing and publishing his new works. The same year, he also officially founded his own studio, providing his knowledge and networks to new projects for companies, institutions and individuals.
He teaches and provides consultancy on Ableton Live, Max for Live and especially Max 8 in music composition, generative processes, modular, and design strategies for audio-reactive visuals.
