option for 16/24/32 bit freeze
option for 16/24/32 bit freeze
freezig tracks always as 32 bit can be very hardcore when freezing a bit more tracks. it can produce glitches/clicks because of the extreme HDD usage.
i usually freeze tracks for save cpu but before the final rendering process i unfreeze all of them.
so for this "testing" and cpu saving purpose 24 bit or even less (16 bit) would be more than enough! and it wouldnt overload hdd.
so when i click on a track and choose freeze would be nice to choose 16/24/32.
thank you!

Re: option for 16/24/32 bit freeze
You mean to say that when Live currently freezes a track its always in 32bit?
If so then yes you have my vote.

Re: option for 16/24/32 bit freeze
yeah i mean that
Re: option for 16/24/32 bit freeze
I totally agree.
IO is always the limiting factor with playback speed for large songs, so 32 or 16 bit files are a literal 2-4 times speed up in these cases where disc playback is used.
Even better, if the state used to generate the original freeze was kept, you could later change over to 32-bit for whatever purpose when needed for fine tuning the sound of a particular part etc.

Re: option for 16/24/32 bit freeze
as i recall there is some technical reason for it,
having to do with the fact that the internal audio processing is 32 bit
?

Re: option for 16/24/32 bit freeze
and what?
from a point of view, freezing is just rendering.
you can render and record 16 bit tracks also

Re: option for 16/24/32 bit freeze
well i'm not a techie but my understanding is that bit reduction requires dithering
so if you freeze a 32 bit track at 16 bits, you will raise the noise floor of that track.
then imagine other scenarios where you flatten, re-freeze... again adding more dither (?)
on the opposite side of the argument from you guys are the folks who demand that their audio remain uncompromised during these processes, and don't mind the file size

When tracks are frozen, the audio files that are created are 32 bit, which ensures that they will not be lower quality than the audio heard prior to freezing.
Re: option for 16/24/32 bit freeze
presumably, they would keep it set at 32 bits
hehe..
so, yeah. i'm not arguing against your idea - just trying to dig up some info because this has been discussed before

Re: option for 16/24/32 bit freeze
i know 16 bit with or without dither is only a preview quality. and thts what i want.
i use freeze in arrangement for a whole track to get some cpu power to work normally on other tracks. then unfreeze before rendering the final track to get back the full quality.
