[amo] snapping is not accurate

Post by peeddrroo » Tue Jan 27, 2009 2:12 pm

the new snapping behaviour in arrangement is not very accurate: it gets very difficult to move clips precisely, or to set a loop with an interger number of bars.
in other words, it doesn't snap to the grid at all.

but i like the idea of being able to click anywhere in the arrangement, it's just not grid-accurate enough.

Hi,

we have problems to reproduce it here. Can you provide a step-by-step instruction that demonstrates it?

I also have a problem with grid snapping.
It doesn't work on any parts of the song which has already got clips arranged.
But does work on empty parts of the arrangements.
Am i missing something here or is this a bug??

well, it's hard to provide a step-by-step, as it's just the way it behaves.
just try to zoom out (maybe having a 2mn time range displayed), and for instance create a 4bars loop. it's hard not to have 4.0.1 instead of 4.
or do actions like moving clips from this distance, it isn't very acurate.

i think it should behave this way: default like in L7 (grid snapping 100% of the time, you can't click between 2 grid lines), and "free" snapping when Alt is held.

mine is free snapping regardless of whether i'm holding alt as i have described above.

I've actually reported this during the alpha testing, and even made a video showing it. I can confirm that 8.0b4 is still doing it.

You can find it here...

Hi,

that's how it's supposed to work, with the addition that other clips starts/ends are also snap points. Would you have lots of clips off grid on other tracks?

yes, i have stuff cut up all over the place.

now that you mention it, i noticed that on some part of the set, it was behaving more like in L7, so that makes sense.
well, it's not convenient at all for me if this is the way it's designed.
maybe another modifier for clip snapping would help?

In my case I only have a few clips that are lined up at 1/2 notes or 1/4 notes, but I can click in between that resolution too.

Also, if clips are also snap points and in a 40+ tracks session one clip is off slightly in the end, and you copy all other tracks without realizing that you just snapped to the one clip which end is off slightly instead of snapping to the selected grid makes me really uncomfortable.

Again, though this is not the case for me. My snap problem only shows up when loading Live 7 sessions.

Btw, I think one of Live's coolest features is the adaptive grid and being able to snap to it. If I can't rely on snapping to whatever grid I have selected then the snap function imho is not so useful. :( I have to agree with the OP, let us snap to the end of a clip by pressing a modifier or something, but imho clips should always snap to whatever grid is selected if snap is turned on.

Thanks,
Ken

Its not working like L7. Its snapping to a really fine resolution. Driving me a bit mental today.

this really needs to be addressed, it makes Live much more difficult to work with.

if you want, i can send you a set without the samples so you can feel how hard it is to click on the grid when you have loads of edited clips.

i really, really, REALLY don't feel at ease with this new snapping behaviour.
i spend half of my time checking what length is the time range i just selected, or undoing duplicates cause the range was 2.0.0+ or 4.0.1 when i thought it was 2.0.0 or 4.0.0
PLEASE CHANGE THIS.
or allow an options.txt entry to revert to 7.0 behaviour
thanks
