mda talkbox, about as simple as it gets, and it works really well for live pas. you can even use the built in mic on your mac if you have one.

How to Set Up a Vocoder in Ableton
1. make an fx return called 'vocode'
2. put the talkbox on it
3. make a carrier (the midi part of the vocoder)
-make a midi channel with a simpler on it
-be sure to use a sound that takes up a good deal of the frequency spectrum.
-it may be a good idea to add distortion to the simpler at this point as it beefs up the harmonic range.
4. send the carrier to the vocoder
-in the i : o routing* set the simpler to send "audio to:" talkbox, and then in the next box down (underneath "audio to:") select "talkbox: carrier". the simpler will now send audio to the vocoder's carrier input.
*i : o routing = the top button of the black buttons at the bottom right of session view
5. send the channel(s) you want to vocode to the 'vocode' fx send
-send at 0db, with the send set to 'pre' (yellow/orange button on the right, horizontally aligned with the fx send knobs).
-turn the volume down so that you don't hear the raw vocal, only the vocoder
6. live vocoding
-if you want to use the vocoder with a live mic then you make an audio channel called 'mic' and (in the i : o properties) set it to take "audio from:" the mic input on your soundcard, and set it to monitoring status "in".
-yes it works with the built in mic on your laptop, just make sure to clean up the input with some eq+ whatnot before it goes to the vocoder. you don't have to worry about gating it because it will only make sound when you are playing the carrier via midi.
TaDaa!
vocode away.

This part just isn't happening for me:
Yes, this is on a midi track, and the MDA Talkbox is on a return track.
Any ideas?
All I get under Audio To is Ext Out, Master, 1-Audio, and Sends.4. send the carrier to the vocoder

you could make a real one, get a small amp - a compression driver and a little box to put the horn in. a length of pipe and a preparedness to look a little odd.

Put Talkbox on an audio track.
Route two channels...modulator and carrier (can be audio or midi channels)...to the talkbox audio track....pan modulator and carrier channels to opposite sides...the left signal will be your carrier the right your modulator...or vice versa depending on the way you have the parameter set on talkbox.

Re: Talkbox Vst Plug Ins
Hey if anyone is still discussing this, I've downloaded the MDA VST plugin's but they are not showing up in the Ableton VST plugin folder. Doesn't seem like Ableton is reading the file. Any suggestions on how to make this work?
Thanks
