How has this one been missed? Am I missing something? Why can't I create automations in grouped tracks?

Found a way around it. Copy and paste the plugin onto a MIDI track, and don't create a MIDI clip in arrangement mode and it will appear. Highlight it by selecting a track above it that you CAN highlight and then once it's highlighted; move your arrow up/down to the empty MIDI track you just created ...

It's an encoding problem.
