Good Random Delay Plugin

Post by db2 » Wed Sep 24, 2008 7:06 pm

I have used/modified some good msp patches which implement a very nice random delay system. The various delays are controlled by buttons which choose the time division, these are layed out like 16, 32, 64, 128, etc. Then you can choose a random progression through these delay rates, without glitches or clicks. then you have your feedback controls which you can also set random ranges, max/mins, etc, for. You get very interesting effects when the delays are changing rates as they feedback off and combine, very interesting sounds. Sometimes I will take a sound and process it through the random delay in various ways, but I'm really surprised that a plug in like this has not been developed, seeing as I've seen it implemented in several max apps, so people out there know the basic structure of this. I've seen/used some other random delay plugins, but nothing gets the correct rhythmic effects I'm looking for. Anyone know what I'm talking about, or have examples? I could post some later from home. Just looking for any info on this.

I have no idea if they make what you want, since I'm on mac (the plugins are PC-only), but they are still really cool delay-plugins and free: Echomania and Bionic Delay. I think Bionic Delay is more like tape-delay, but Echomania is multiple delays in one.

But dunno if they do what you want.

When I get home later tonight I will try and upload some examples so you can hear what I'm talking about.

Dunno if it's quite what you're after, and it's PC only I'm afraid, but here's a cool 'circuit bent' delay

& also on PC/Mac

You could probably do this with a bit of tinkering in side live using a midi track, the IAC bus, automated dummy clips and follow actions. I'm not sure how right now as i'm not in a position to break live out and experiment, but i'm pretty sure it could work..
I imagine it would work some thing like this..
Put a delay, or even two in a rack in parallel, on an audio track with the clip or audio input you want to effect.
Create a bunch of clips on the midi track, point the midi track at the audio track.
Draw a bunch of automation in to those clips to change feedback and delay time of the delay plugs on the audio track..
Set the follow actions to other and some bar division,or even various different bar divisions.
Hit play in the scene..
See what happens??
